I don't think kids understand. As "careful" or "harmless", internet safety is no joke. Kids seem to take things so lightly sometimes. Bullying online is as serious as face-to-face. These videos are good for them to see. You have to be very careful about what you put out there and, of course, talk to people around you about what is going on. Kids lack the communication with the adults around them. Because there is no communication and/or trust, no one knows what's going on.
I wonder what will it take for kids to believe how important internet safety really is. Hopefully, not the worst.
Getting started

I have to disagree. With so many video campaigns today warning of the potential hazards and depicting some of the horry stories, I believe kids are in fact starting to get the message: Be aware, be careful, avoid strangers, report threatening behavior...
ReplyDeleteAs parents, guardians and mentors, we have to do our part - We have to play a vital role in educating our children on Internet Safety as well. We can not leave it solely up to the media.
Yes, I think they *know* the dangers but are they following the rules?
ReplyDeleteKind of how the listen to the Halloween safety rules but still rip open a Kit Kat here and there. Will they follow *all the rules?
I agree Dr. Luongo. We all "know" the dangers. We all hear it, but do we "listen"? Smoking is harmful to your health. How much money do these tobacco companies actually make? I don't doubt that students do take heed to the campaigns and warnings, but I am nervous that many do not.
ReplyDeleteI was also referring to the dangers of bullying via the internet. Many people/students are so nonchalant in the words that they use, not realizing the effect that they have on other people around them.
